Wiper Arm
Hi All
I am looking for a new Front Window Wiper arm (Runs from the motor to the two wiper mechainics). The Motor is fine, but gets very warm, I beleive that the arm may be damaged in some way? I can not see the part I need for sale on any mini spares web site.
Mini is a 1994 Sprite. Any help appreciated

Do you mean the Wiper Rack components? If so they are easily viewed via the PDF's available when you click on shop on the Somerford Mini Specialists website. I imagine they'll also show up on Moss Europe's site too?
Anyway if there was a problem with the rack then the wipers wouldn't wipe the screen properly, so it could be a fault with the wiper motor itself and it needs an overhaul with new brushes and a good clean/grease?
Do the wipers still park by themselves?

Early wiper wheel boxes
Is anybody else having problems with the new reproduction early 22-tooth wiper wheel boxes? I fitted a pair last year, with Minispares wiper blades, so all should match. After 10 minutes use the splines completely stripped on the wheel box spindles on both boxes. I fitted a new pair and the first time it rained, within 30 strokes of the arms, the splines had gone again. I have tried the wedge-type arms as well, to tighten down better, but no luck. Looking at the spindles, they have just a few crude, very coarse splines, nothing like an original wheel box. I have had to resort to drilling through the arm and spline and putting a self-tapping screw in to hold them in place. Looks rubbish - any thoughts? Try to find secondhand?

wipers
some of the cheap chrome wiper kits avaliable are a bit nasty. Im assuming you have the chrome wiper arms plus blades? Some chrome blades iv seen dont follow the curve of the windscreen, hence the missing parts. There are good heavy duty chrome wiper arms avaliable somewhere. They have a stronger spring in them which pushes the blade tighter against the screen. Keep an eye out for them.

Wipers
The problem of smearing and patches that are not wiped properly is normally dur to the sping tension in the wiper arm, the age / quality of the rubber on the blade and the cantilever springs in the blade itself. You may also get patches of the area swept by the blade not being cleaned because the attack angle of the blade to the windscreen is not correct (the mounting to the spindles are different to the original arms / blades. One thing that is often overlooked is the wiper mechanism itself. If the mechanism is unbalanced, there is excessive play in the ball joints etc it can have an effect on the performance of the blades on the screen as they are bolted to the mechanism. Oh - the carbon is actually graphite which is used when quality blades are manufactured during the process after extrusion of the rubber into the shape of the wiper blade to prevent it sticking and the rubber perishing at the high temperates used in the process (graphite is a lubricant). That means quality blades last alot longer than Halfords own etc.

Youll end up doing it atleast once more aswell, as, as soon as the wiper arms go back on they decide to park in a different place to where the wiper motor stops without them being on,,if that makes sense

windscreen wipers
It probably is chap!....While you have it apart, its worth pulling out the entire rack that operates the wiper arms ( take the arms off first and just pull ) and give it a good dose of grease then shove it back in again! it cant hurt and will increase the life of the new gear!

Wiper wheel box
In my experience, the wheel box components stiffen up through lack of lubrication, especially the splined shaft that the wiper arm fits on to. It's no great problem to remove the wheel box, clean and grease the components and refit. Problem solved (usually). If you dismantle the box and find stripped cogs then clearly you have to buy some new ones. Need to know your model year...

Smearing Wipers.....
Oh, avoid after market chrome wipers too. The chroming process damages the coil springs in the arms and the leaf springs in the blades making them much weaker and less able to press onto the screen properly.

Windsceen wipers not working on fast speed
Ive re-wired my mini from scratch and everything is OK apart from a strange problem with the windscreen wipers.
Im pretty sure its not electrical, because, if I disconnect the mechanical cable that runs from the wiper motor to the blade arms the motor will run on fast and slow speed. But when the mechanics are connected it will only run at slow speed. The fast speed moves the wipers half a cycle then stops.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

ss wipers
I have done that in the past darren! Its ok on the arm itself but the boss that fits onto the the wiper wheel box isnt stainless or chrome!! The heavy duty wipers sold on this site are better at contacting the screen but still not as good as the o/e wipers! I have even tried replacing the wiper rubber for a hallfords refill type which again is an improvement! The biggest problem I have with these wipers is judder!!!!!

Wax Based Shampoo
My ass, like that crap hits my car! The best thing to use to remove any crud from the screen is meths and a sheet or two of kitchen towel! This is not the problem! After careful examination of the wipers that i currently have (heavy duty 11) it appears that the problem lies in all the slack within the joints/pivot points of the blades! If you look at regular wiper blades ie Bosch or Champion all the pivot points are made up with a nylon bush which removes all slack. So what is needed is a company to make a proper blade and wiper arm kit based on o/e equipment but in SS!

Chrome wipers
AFAIK you will always have problems with proper chrome wipers because the chroming process damages the spring in the arms. Basically it makes it much weaker. You can either fit a good non-chromed spring or get stainless wipers or just fit black ones. The blades suffer from the same basic problem too. For a three inch wiper, standard black ones are about as good as it gets :-) A note on wiper blades - never ever use posh, super expencive blades with improved coatings on them. There is a good reason car makers dont fit them and its not to do with cost. The best way to get water of glass, is for the glass and the wipers to be clean. You dont see window cleaners with carbon coated squeegies because the coating leaves a greasy smear behind it. This goes for Rainx and the like too. That stuff may work once or twice, but once it starts to break down you cant see a thing at sunset or at night and its absolute murder to get off.
